2024 CNF REU WEEK TWO SCHEDULE


REMINDER: UNDERGRADUATE CNF USER CLEANROOM RESTRICTIONS

Undergraduate CNF User restrictions will start with Monday-Friday 8am-6pm cleanroom access with mentor only. After 50 hours of lab time, reasonable tool usage, and demonstration of safe lab practices, undergrads will be granted “extended access” -- Monday-Friday 8am-11pm. After 100 hours of lab usage and reasonable tool usage, undergraduate users will be granted full access privileges. Talk to Phil Infante, CNF Lab Safety Manager, when you feel you are close to the 50 hour / 100 hour lab time marks. He will determine if your next access level is appropriate.

Stacy will pass out safety glasses and check to make sure you are dressed to the Dress Code. Melanie-Claire will be there to make sure you all show up! (And pass out donuts.)

PART ONE: Introduction to the CNF Cleanroom with Christopher Alpha   
9:15 - 11:00 a.m., 340 Duffield Hall
Chris will take you on an in-person tour of the lab — and if there is time, the 2nd floor lab spaces as well. You will discuss basics of lab operations and see tool and interior lab spaces, with relevance towards the subject matter covered in the following Part II and III.

SEI DISCUSSION: Introduction to the Societal & Ethical Issues of Nanotechnology
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., 340 Duffield Hall
Dan McCollister and/or Michael Skvarla will lead a discussion on laboratory ethics with special regard to our work in nanotechnology.

NEW USER LUNCHEON 
12:00 – 1:00 p.m., 340 Duffield Hall (ALL 16 CNF REUs ARE INVITED!)
The lunch will include New User & Staff Introductions

PART TWO: Chemical Safety Training with Phil Infante
1:00 - 5:00 p.m., 340 Duffield Hall
Part II covers the formal statement of lab policy and procedures with special regard to safety and proper lab etiquette. This will take up a large portion of the afternoon.

- Join the PARADIM REUs as Henrik Spoon, Mann Library Engineering Librarian, discusses the top tools and databases useful to students seeking scholarly information on a variety of subjects. Going beyond Google, he will show subscribed resources that lead to journal articles, patents, standards, materials property data, and ebooks. Learn how to recognize popular vs. peer-review work and deceptive journals. We will also discuss citation managers that can organize your citations and bibliographies.
